A Cooperative Credit Union Association survey has found that as millions of Americans retire over the next decade, financial crimes and abuse against the elderly are occurring at an ever-increasing alarming rate.
And as all Americans encounter scams with increasing regularity, studies show that few financial consumers are taking steps to improve their financial literacy in the digital age.
More than half of caretakers for the elderly have reported an elder being targeted with fraud; more than a quarter of elders have also fallen prey to at least one financial scam. And the problem is likely to get worse before it gets better.
There will be many more seniors to scam in the coming years: 77 million baby boomers will soon retire. And scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and creative in their efforts to separate us boomers from our hard-earned money.
Several scams seem to target boomers, and as we need to supplement our income due to the ever-rising cost of living, we have sometimes become too eager to get some extra cash. But remember the old saying, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true.
The best way to increase your income is to find a part-time job; as I discussed in my earlier blog, there are several ways to do this.
The Telephone Scam
For instance, many scams online, like, for a few thousand dollars to have someone build and host a functioning website featuring various household products or sales. Each time someone buys an item, you collect a portion of the profit.
All you need to do is encourage people to shop there, who will take care of everything else, like the stocking inventory and product shipping.
But this is all fraud; nothing will be handled, and the thief offering you the opportunity is long gone with your hard-earned money, and there will be nothing for you. Driver ScamAnother scam is a driver wanted. This scam was recently advertised on Craigslist and had many variations. In one case, a man asks you to chauffeur his wife, who is visiting your area.
With the driver scam, You will receive a check (or “money gram”) for $2,50l. You will deposit the check, immediately pull out the cash— $700 to cover your fee and any ancillary expenses, and the rest is mailed back to the scammer. Your bank probably won’t know for a day or two that you have deposited a fake check, and of course, you are left to repay the money.
Remember, any opportunity that offers a straightforward way to make a lot of money is often a scam,
The best way is the old way; you will achieve your goals through effort and discipline, which is why I recommend Wealthy Affiliate to anyone looking for a way to earn some extra cash.
