An MLM strategy may be an illegal pyramid scheme.[6]

How Does MLM Work?

The Multilevel Marketing program works through recruitment, you are invited to become a distributor or consultant or associate, usually through another distributor of the company’s products and sometimes through a generally advertised meeting.

If you choose to become a distributor with the direct selling company, in most cases you’ll earn money both through the sales of the MLM’s products and through recruiting other distributors, you will receive a percentage of the income these distributors that are generated through their sales and recruitment.

And when those distributors recruit distributors of their own, you’ll earn money on the income they generate too.

The distributor that originally recruited you and whoever is above him or her in the recruitment chain is called your upline.

Recruiters

Your recruits, and the people they recruit, and so on, become your sales network, or “downline.

Often the distributor who recruits you will give you some help getting started, including training.

If the MLM is not a pyramid scheme, it will pay you based on your sales to retail customers, without having to recruit new distributors.

Be n the lookout for pyramid schemes, they can look a lot like legitimate MLM business opportunities, but if you do become a distributor for a pyramid scheme, it can cost you and your recruits a substantial amount of time and money.

• Do you like selling?

• Do you have a sales plan?

Consider whether you have friends and family who will buy this product from you over and over again. They may buy from you initially but will they continue to do so on a regular basis? Think about how you would find and keep other regular customers. Can people buy something like this product elsewhere, maybe cheaper?

What are your income goals? 

You might think that you will be able to earn a substantial income through the MLM. but the truth is In fact, most people who join MLMs and work hard make little or no money, and some of them lose money.

It can be very costly to run an MLM business every business venture has risks, and, MLMs are no different.

Expenses can include training and travel costs, website fees promotional materials, costs to host parties, and costs to buy products.

Also, consider the time demands of the business, like going to training, recruiting new distributors, managing paperwork, recording inventory, and shipping products.
